Designs and the City: Sex and the City 2

Yes they're back.... and coming soon to a theater near you. Carrie, Miranda, Samantha and Charlotte return to the screen in Sex and the City 2 (Warner Brothers) this Memorial Day weekend and the film promises fashion, style, travel, love, drama and even a gay marriage with Liza Minelli as the entertainment thrown in for good measure. And great sets.

I had the opportunity to once again interview Lydia Marks who also reprised her role as set decorator (she worked on SATC1 and gave us Miranda Priestly's fabulous power office in The Devil Wears Prada). Lydia, who is also an interior designer and principal of Marks & Frantz in NYC, (her real life work can be seen at the Standard Hotel's roof top bar)  had the opportunity to redesign Carrie and Mr. Big's apartment along with a pretty fabulous wedding party. (Jeremy Conway served as production designer of both the film and television series and came up with the initial concepts).

Cinema Style: What was the design direction for Carrie and Mr. Big's apartment?

Lydia: It was decorated as if Carrie (and her decorator) chose the pieces, but with Big very much in mind!  It was designed to be a place he would be comfortable.  It has a lot of strong lines in it, and furniture with hard edges.  In the layering of the furniture and the personal objects, books, textiles, and collections, I tried to add a little Carrie into it. For example, the carpets were patterns that I chose to reflect her nature and creativity.

Lydia: The kitchen was the one room in the house that was totally given over to Big in terms of design, it's his room. For example, the simple, elegant, mid-century rosewood table and chairs are something he would have chosen. Knowing that this room would be seen in many different shots of the apartment, we wanted a light fixture that would work with that period of furniture and complement the room.

For the living/dining room we made our own cashmere covered wainscoting in a pinstriped deep shade of chocolate to create a rich, luxurious feeling space.

Cinema Style: How did the story line play into your decisions?

Lydia: One of the design trends now is overscale furniture. This drove us to search out more vintage pieces, lending a challenge to find the right furniture for Big and Carrie’s NYC apartment - and a set that needs to leave room for actors to move. In the beginning, when the designer and I were discussing Carrie's apartment and what style might appeal to her character, we considered French Deco from the 1930’s because the scale was appealing. We ultimately moved away from that specifically, but tried to retain the scale and the character of that period.

Lydia: The design direction in the foyer was to create a console table that supported an important script note. The director wanted Carrie to make a dramatic entrance that brought her deeper into the apartment. So rather than fulfilling the mundane role of a place to drop your keys and mail, the foyer became an important backdrop for them every time they walk in the apartment. The console table, a great Mastercraft piece, is filled with an eclectic assortment of vintage pieces from different time periods and different 1st Dibs vendors: a beautiful handblown glass bell jar filled with butterflies from the 1800s, fanciful striped lamps and a mirror that is reminiscent of hollywood glamour. 

Cinema Style: And no Carrie Bradshaw interior would be complete without the ultimate closet. Besides finding the perfect man, her dream was to have the perfect closet. Looks like she gets her wish!

Purpose, Passion and Ping Pong

I thought I'd share with you my recent cover story for American Airlines Celebrated Living on Susan Sarandon whose upcoming film Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps was previewed at the Cannes Film Festival this past week. Sarandon plays the mother of a young trader (Shia LaBouef) and gets caught up in the real estate/economic crunch. A very timely tale indeed...

While we know the Academy Award winning actress for her many multi-faceted roles and volunteer work (she's played everything from a nun to a gun-toting waitress on the lam -- and who can forget her role as Janet in the cult see-it-at-midnight classic Rocky Horror Picture Show?) -- she is also an ardent activist and about to tackle the real-life role of empty nester.

Sarandon has also added another passion to her resume -- ping pong! She discovered the sport while working with a group of documentary producers and eventually partnered on SPIN New York which is a bar and table tennis club located in the Flatiron district. All players at all levels are welcome and I am glad to see ping pong become fashionable! For more about SPIN, check out their website.

Mothers Day at the Movies: A Look Back at Monster in Law

With Mother's Day upon us, I thought it might be fun to visit another type of mother -- the mother in law.  Hollywood has almost always portrayed her as evil and Monster-in-Law, the 2005 comedy that pits Jane Fonda as a jealous/protective/nightmare mother in law Viola Fields and Jennifer Lopez as the prospective daughter in law is a perfect case in point.

The sets were designed by production designer Missy Stewart who also gave us the memorable interiors of Legally Blonde. "Set" in idyllic Montecito, Fonda's  manse was actually a 1927 Wallace Neff estate in Pasadena with a wonderful rose garden and fabulous oval shaped entrance hallway. The decor is  elegant with lots of French, Mediterranean and classic Southern California touches. I love the ivory tone on tone palette used for the bedroom and sitting rooms.

Stewart filled every space with details to tell us about the character's life and used actual photos of Fonda with Ted Turner, Jon Voight, Oprah Winfrey and Gloria Steinem for a tabletop vignette.

Viola's master bedroom is filled with dramatic bed and window treatments, Aubusson rugs and decor as grand as the character herself. And speaking of over the top, Fonda reportedly used ex-husband Ted Turner as inspiration for her role.

Viola's son Kevin has a Craftsman house (chosen for its masculine attributes) with asian inspired touches.

 Kym Barrett is responsible for the film's costume designs and felt they were "supporting characters in and of themselves" as "clothing is used as weaponry between Charlie (Lopez) and Viola." With her large hats, abundance of jewelry and power looks that mean business, Viola's wardrobe is intimidating and over the top while Charlie is costumed in hip, bohemian street looks.

 Mother's Day is May 9th -- score some points and do something nice for your mother in law too. Or not.

A Tale of Two Crowns

Sequels and remakes seem to be the order of the day in Hollywood as filmmakers continually try to improve on a classic and practice the old adage "imitation is the sincerest for of flattery." Most of the time they miss the mark and should leave well enough alone. And often the remake provides a fresh new take on a classic. Thomas Crown Affair is a perfect case in point of the latter.

I was watching a Tonight Show interview with Pierce Brosnan the other night and the discussion of a possible sequel to his remake of Thomas Crown Affair came up. Apparently no script has been decided
as of yet but hope springs eternal. Both films captured the style and glamour of an era and tell the tale of a cat and mouse caper with a multi millionaire protagonist  and his sophisticated suitor.

The original stars Steve McQueen (who goes against type) as a bored playboy/corporate titan who decides to pull off a bank heist in Boston. Chased by insurance investigator Vicky Anderson (Faye Dunaway), the elegant stylish film is filled with polo, art auctions, dune buggys at the beach and a memorable soundtrack. The film is said to be McQueen's favorite and the part was originally offered to Sean Connery (who would have made an equally wonderful Crown).

The remake stars Pierce Brosnan as the billionaire Crown and Rene Russo as Catherine Banning as the insurance investigator. Similar plot lines but this time the heist is a Monet at the Met and the playground extends from Manhattan to Martinique and racing on the beach is replaced with a flight on a glider and polo is replaced by crashing a catamaran.

Dunaway's wardrobe was designed by Theodora Van Runkle. Faye Dunaway noted in the book Dressed: A Century of Hollywood Costume Design (Harper Collins) "It was the age of the mini, just as it was starting to happen. I said to Thea, 'Let's go very short, this woman doesn't do anything by half measures.' And the micro-mini was born."

Both Dunaway's updo and Russo's hairstyle caused a sensation  and were highly requested and copied....

as were the use of oversize hats in both films....

Production designer Bruno Rubeo and set decorator Leslie Rollins were not allowed to shoot in the Metropolitan so they developed ingenious sets that were identical to the portrait galleries. The interior of the New York public library was used as well as a soundstage.

Crown's to die for townhouse was also shot on a soundstage. Shown below are designs for the entrance hall and study.

There is Style in Giving Back: The Genesis Awards

The old saying "every dog gets his day" came true last week at the Humane Society of the United States 24th annual Genesis Awards - think of it as Oscar night for the animal kingdom.  The star studded awards show celebrates individuals and the media who make a difference on behalf of animals.

Celebrity presenters such as Keely Shaye and Pierce Brosnan, Antonio Banderas, Big Love's Ginnifer Goodwin and Teri Hatcher gave awards to shows such as the Academy Award winning Up and The Cove to the Ellen Degeneres Show, Family Guy and Whale Wars.

Melanie Griffith presented her mother Tippi Hedren (many will remember her in Hitchcock's The Birds and Marnie) with the Genesis Lifetime Achievement Award on behalf of her work for the preservation of big cats. For over forty years she has worked tirelessly in raising awareness and on legislation to ban the breeding and trade of exotic cats. Hedren's Shambala Reserve is a loving home to 70 discarded big cats -- leopards, servals, tigers, panthers, bobcats and lynxes to name a few. The reserve is forty miles outside of Los Angeles and open to the public. Congratulations Tippi!
